A Message from ISS to All Humankind
I came across this video on NASA Television’s YouTube channel this morning and knew instantly I wanted to share it. The video, titled Further Up Yonder: A Message from ISS to All Humankind, is the work of Italian videomaker, Giacomo Sardelli, who’s YouTube channel can be found here. Sardelli writes of the video, “I’m not the first one to use NASA’s pictures taken from the International Space Station to craft a Timelapse video. You can find many of them on the Internet, that’s where my inspiration came from. What I wanted to do, though, was to look beyond the intrinsic beauty of those pictures, and use them to tell a story and share the messages sent by the astronauts who worked on the station in the last 11 years.” In this endeavor Sardelli is, without doubt, successful.
I hope you enjoy this video as much as I do. I also hope it serves as a reminder that humanity can work together and, in fact, is working together. For me, there is no greater wish this holiday season then the wish that we continue to explore, continue to cooperate, continue to learn, and continue to spark and excite the minds of future generations. I thank Mr. Sardelli for so beautifully illustrating that this is already being done.

Nice video. I wish that your wish comes true.

Thank you Carina, and thank you for the opportunities I had to share smiles, thoughts, and dreams with you in 2012, I look forward to more of the same in the coming year.

A stunning video!
Now if that spirit of cooperation can spread beyond the space programs to the rest of international relations.

Baby steps, Guapo. That it’s being done on one frontier proves in can also be done on others. The first steps are being made, this alone excites me and lets me know that others will follow.

You’re welcome Mobius, it may be my new favorite as well! On Mr Sardelli’s YouTube channel there’s a very interesting video of an interview he did with ABC News Australia where he talks about the making of the video, it’s definitely worth checking out! A link to his channel can be found in my post.
Thanks for stopping by!

And Alabama, very cool! I’ve spent some time there, you have some incredibly beautiful beaches and some very interesting Indian mounds…oh yeah, and I once drove like 5 hours to catch an exhibit on Leonardo da Vinci at the Birmingham Museum of Art. Awesome exhibit and a beautiful museum!

Besides the video’s beauty, what a great message that is applicable everyday, but also one fitting for the season.
If humans only could cooperate more for the benefit of all … that is focusing on humanity – but to do so, we must learn to extend and bend our cultural boundaries … thus the conflict of focusing on humanity and being human. … but humans can also learn – thus learning can be a vehicle of hope.
Great find Alex!

Great comment Frank. It was, without question, those messages from the astronauts which Mr Sardelli included in his video which makes his work stand out above other ISS videos and which definitely made me HAVE to share it. The voices stating that peace, cooperation, joint exploration and advancement not only is a possibility, it is a reality. It’s happening daily. Where we focus our attention is a choice. We can focus on the good which is already taking place and expand it, or we can focus on the bad and expand that. Choices. And I think you already know where I choose to focus my attention Frank.

This also reminds me of Star Trek’s First Contact … the Vulcans saying, (paraphrased), “Humans are so barbaric as you chose to solve problems with violence over minds.”
December 24, 2012 at 7:42 am
Very good indeed, Frank! And I have a few of my own favorite Vulcan sayings:
- Logic is the cement of our civilization, with which we ascend from chaos, using reason as our guide.
- Challenge your preconceptions, or they will challenge you.
- Wanting is more pleasurable than having.
- A Vulcan never bluffs.
May you live long and prosper Frank!

Very good Alex … I’m not a Trekkie, but that scene has just stuck with me. … and your additions fit right in with it.
December 24, 2012 at 8:16 am
Alex, the video is awesome, TY! I think your intention is to send me to the space one day
it’s not good to see all that beauty and not to have an opportunity to go there
December 25, 2012 at 1:24 pm
No way Zhenya! You don’t get to go to space unless I do!
December 27, 2012 at 3:58 am
This is just so inspiring, thank you for sharing it…….I can’t even put into words how this makes me feel about all of the petty squabbling that we humans indulge in….internationally, nationally, individually,,,sigh…
December 28, 2012 at 8:49 am
I think you did a good job of putting it into words Suzanne. The squabbling simply deserves no more attention than you’ve given in. And there’s no shortage of awe inspiring wonders to pay attention to, both here on our tiny little planet as well as throughout the universe.

I couldn’t agree more…

The world’s drama seems so small and petty when viewed from space. Here we are, a small rock orbiting the sun, completely wrapped up in the oftentimes violent nonsense that is the human experience. Yet the Earth keeps spinning, time marches on, history repeats itself.
The day we’re able to put our international egos aside is the day we’ll successfully work together. Here’s to hoping this will happen.
Amazing video! Thanks for sharing Alex.
December 28, 2012 at 11:08 am
Though we haven’t as yet put aside our international egos Eric, the world IS working together in many areas, space exploration being one of them. It’s up to humanity through where we focus our attention to show that this cooperation is what excites us, its what interests us, and it’s what we want more of.
December 28, 2012 at 3:57 pm
Great stuff Alex. Uplifting.
