Green and Red on a Grey San Antonio Day

Not feeling well over the past several days (a mid case of flu), and being indoors for what seems like forever, I found myself getting a bit stir-crazy earlier this afternoon…and I decided on a walk. My room-mate had warned me that this neighborhood was a bit like a black hole…meaning once in, it’s nearly impossible to find one’s way back out. He, I learned, is correct. I did manage to get a bit lost….luckily I had my camera with me!

  1. Great photos. I like the photos of the Oriental Poppies the most but I had to laugh at the Ball Washer… Too easy not to enter a joke there! Thanks for sharing these. Get well soon!!

    February 26, 2012 at 8:13 pm

That first poppy simply floats suspended on the image! Lovely bokeh too. (I knew I’d get to use that word sooner or later!) The little daisies are just visible enough not to interfere with that impossible-to-believe poppy. You done good. Makes being sick almost worthwhile since you took the walk.
Whatever do you mean “toothpicks”? Anybody who believes that, has never been impaled on one! Ha Ha.
    Feel better soon!

    • That poppy did, indeed, stop me in my tracks. It was alone, one poppy in a sea of green and white, so quite impossible to miss. Luckily there was a woman there working in her garden who was kind enough to speak with me. It was she who identified it for me…..otherwise I would have been clueless! She also encouraged me to photograph it as well as inviting me back to collect some seeds from it. Gracious woman. Reminds me of someone. : )

    (Someone had to do it)

Very nice photos :) I especially like the poppies.

    • LOL! And that someone was you!

Thanks for the kind comment and for making me smile this morning.

  10. these are great photos–you really have an eye. What differentiates ‘San Antonio’ prickly pear cacti from other prickly pear cacti? While I know from Pace commercials that it’s vital that salsa be made in Alamopolis, but succulents? Maybe the difference is that the SA varietals are larger, as I hear everything is bigger in Texas.

    February 28, 2012 at 12:49 am

    • Yes, you’re correct…salsa should only be made in San Antonio, or at least south of I-10, and never in NEW YORK CITY! You are also correct in that everything IS bigger in Texas….this includes cacti, belt buckles, trucks, stars, and margarita glasses. In fact, everything is so large we’re running out of room and thinking of taking over New Mexico and Oklahoma. We would expand out into Louisiana as well, but have difficulty navigating beyond the French road signs in Lafayette. Speak English damn it!

      February 28, 2012 at 5:56 am

      • Oui! And if Texas takes over NM and Oklahoma, no big loss. Nobody will miss Oklahoma, and there’s already an Old Mexico.
In regards to NY salsa, as I recall, Cookie got lynched for serving some.

        February 28, 2012 at 1:31 pm

  11. Hey Alex. Great pics. My mexican friends told me that back home they use to eat cactus!! Do you do that in SA too? That’s crazy! A month ago cactus were still non comestible prickly green things, and now I find them yummy just looking at em!

    February 28, 2012 at 7:53 am

    • They are eaten here…I, however, haven’t tried it as yet. I’d definitely like to though!

      February 28, 2012 at 9:17 am

      • If I were you, I’d go buy some cactus now!

        February 28, 2012 at 10:03 am

        • LOL! Right now?!

Ok, but I’m not sure what to do with it.

          February 28, 2012 at 10:16 am

          • Cut it and eat it :) Hm, but ask for advice first, I don’t want you to eat a toxic one. No, seriously, there should be a place downtown were you can buy ready to eat cactus slices. When I go to Mexico, this is the first thing I eat.

            February 28, 2012 at 10:35 am

            • OK : ) If I feel well enough to go in to the office today I will look for ready-to-eat cactus slices downtown….and I’ll give you a full report.

  12. Love the red!!!!!!!

    February 28, 2012 at 11:23 am

    • So do I!

And thank you for the visit : )

      February 28, 2012 at 12:08 pm

  13. HI Alex,

Hopefully you’ll find this comment buried beneath your 200 emails. :) The poppy is stunning . . . It made smile, as the book in which I currently edit daily has a quite prominent theme centering around a flower called “Falling in Love Poppies”. Have you heard of this one?

I was sorry to hear you were ill, and do hope you’re feeling much better this week.
Also, just wanted to thank you again for leaving such kind words on Ms. George’s blog. I know we both think highly of her, and while you could have chosen to simply leave your thoughts respectively, it brought warmth to my heart that you would add upon my own musings.

So glad to meet you, Alex,

    Blessings,
    Cara

    • Thank you Cara, no I haven’t heard of it but would love to check it out. And yes, George….every time I visit her blog she completely blows me away to the point of being speechless….which is a rarity for me! I find it almost impossible to comment on her work, impossible to put into words. Her courage stuns me…in a very true sense of the word. You managed to do so, and to do it in a way which I’d yet to wrap my head around. To be honest, I didn’t even read the other comments.

Yes, I am feeling better, thanks for asking…and it’s nice meeting you as well.

      March 1, 2012 at 12:32 pm

      • It’s funny you should say that . . . about finding it nearly impossible to comment; usually I’ll read her posts, then take a while to think about how it is I feel, rather comment hastily or perfunctorily, as we are forced to do if we are to Pass Go and collect $200. As you know, tasks and obligations weave about a day’s work, eating up time and availability. But somehow I almost always make the time to tell George what I thought. It’s important. If you asked me, I’m not sure I could tell you why. I know you understand. :)

        March 1, 2012 at 1:02 pm

        • I understand completely…and I like the Pass Go and Collect $200 analogy. (Remember the 200 emails? Which I’m happy to say I worked down to 93!) George has a way of stopping me dead in my tracks, she demands attention…because she’s that damn good.

          March 1, 2012 at 10:09 pm

          • 93, nice! I don’t know how you to it; if I have more than 10 unanswered emails in my inbox, I break out in hives.

            March 2, 2012 at 11:08 am

            • The obvious answer is….I don’t do it, hence the 93! : )

              March 2, 2012 at 11:11 am

      • Oh, and I am so glad to hear you’re on the mend. Just a tip that works wonders for me: if you’re ever feeling a cold coming on, take a cold-eeze for the next 3 days. Works like a charm every time :)

        March 1, 2012 at 1:04 pm

        • I’ll have to try that…I’ve heard of it. I rarely, RARELY, get sick…when I do I usually hit the orange juice pretty hard.

          March 1, 2012 at 10:11 pm

  14. Thanks!
